The Lights, or the Sun and Moon, are the most important planets in an astrology chart. Their polarities show compatibility between two people.

One of the most popular topics in astrology is compatibility, or knowing which signs of the zodiac have the best rapport. Studying the polarity of the planets is one of the first steps in determining whether or not two people will have a harmonious relationship. Although all of the planets in an astrology chart contribute to a relationship between people, the most powerful planets to consider are the Lights, or the Sun and the Moon.

The Lights and Compatibility

The Lights, or luminaries, are the most influential planets in a natal chart. We call them “planets" for convenience, but the Sun is a star and the Moon is a satellite which orbits the earth.

When determining compatibility, study the Sun sign first. Harmonious Sun signs share the same polarity. There are two polarities: positive (masculine) or negative (feminine). The polarities are not good or bad; they merely show how the energy of the planet in the sign is expressed.

Fire and air signs are considered to be positive or masculine. A positive sign pushes their energies out in the world. They are generally outgoing and optimistic. Water and earth signs are negative or feminine. Negative signs pull or attract others to them as their energies are focused inwards. They are generally more introverted and reserved. Therefore, fire and air are considered more compatible with each other while earth and water signs are more compatible. Fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

Suns that share the same polarity will approach their daily activities with similar motivation and experiences. This shared life experience gives them an instant camaraderie or kinship. For example, Prince William has a water Sun sign (Cancer) and Kate Middleton has an earth Sun sign (Capricorn). Water and earth both have negative polarities and, as a result, their Suns are compatible.

The other luminary, the Moon, is sometimes even more important in determining how an individual interacts with others. The Moon indicates our instincts and what makes us happy. By studying the Moon in a chart, a clearer idea of what someone needs to feel secure or find enjoyment is found. Again, the polarities are taken into account. Moons in positive signs are more compatible with other planets in positive signs while Moons in negative signs get along better with planets in negative signs. Again, using Prince William and Kate Middleton as an example, they both have their Moons in Cancer, a negative or feminine sign, so they are compatible.

Besides looking at the polarities between the Sun and Moon, it is important to note when one person’s Sun is in the same sign as, or conjunct to, another person’s Moon. Vivian Robson writes, ”The strongest sign of affinity [between two people] is when the luminaries ... are in conjunction.” This does not necessarily lead to a committed relationship, but it shows a very strong bond.

Once more this is shown with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s luminaries as her Moon in Cancer is conjunct to not only his Sun in Cancer but also to his Moon in Cancer. Again and again the polarities and placements of the luminaries show the strength of their relationship. With all of this compatibility between their Lights, it is not surprising that their relationship is leading to marriage.
